Cleveland, John Linden, 1865, Cloth

Fair

Cloth. First thus. American edition based on the ninth, much improved German original. Dated 1865 in WorldCat listing. Text entirely in German. Printed in Gothic type. With a supplement (we translate) "The Eye, its diseases and its healing through Baunscheidtism." The Baunscheidt method or philosophy of counter-irritation has been compared to acupuncture and moxibustion. If the idea of acupunture on or even near the eye makes you uneasy, you are not alone. The book is in good overall condition except that the spine is missing about the bottom two inches of the cloth covering. Frontispiece portrait of Carl Baunscheidt under tissue protector (tissue torn in lower right corner). The American editor/publisher was a practitioner and promoter of Baunscheidtism. At first he was merely an approved distributor of genuine instruments made by Baunscheidt's operation, especially the so-called Lebenswecker or "life-awakener,",but eventually he moved on to manufacture his own version as well as other apparatuses. The book is accompanied by a number of ephemeral documents, which must be vanishingly rare. These are in German or German and English bilingually.

Ephemera are as follows. All published by John Linden.;

Handbill. Baunscheidt's Lebenswecker. In German. Text credited to Dr Mez. G. Hermann Schauenburg with a quotation from Goethe. Also serves as an order form for Lebenswecker.

Handbill. Baunscheidtism and the Cholera. Top in English, bottom a general description of Baunscheidtism at bottom in German.

Leaflet on pink paper, folded. English on one side, German on the other. “Baunscheidtism. Caution and Explanation.” Left-side text on each side by Baunscheidt, right-side text by Linden.

Baunscheidtism or the Exanthematic Method of Cure. Narrow handbill, German on one side, English on the other. Explanation and price list. Three copies.
