Dresden, Germany, 1908, Postcard
Very good
Real-photo postcard of attendees at the Fourth Esperanto Congress, held in 1908 in Dresden, Germany. 1800 Esperanto speakers attended, and heard an address by Ludwig Zamenhof, inventor of Esperanto, according to a report in the New York Times. Zamenhof is seated in the front of the group photograph and is singled out with a message “Long live the Master” in Esperanto. The location of the photograph is atop the “Bastei,” a high, jagged rock formation on the Elbe River not far from Dresden; the exact place is identified on the face. On the reverse side is a message from the sender in Esperanto to an individual in Perth, West Australia. Cancelled Deutsches Reich stamp in upper corner of back side. Note that the back was used for a message in the conventional way for divided-back postcards, but the card is not actually divided. Cancelled 10 pfennig Deutsches Reich Germania stamp on postal side.
