Item Details

London, The African World and Cape Cairo Express., 1907, Wrappers

First (only) printing, Fair to good

Wrappers. Small folio. Fabulous memento of Egypt under the British crown, a vital point in the Cape to Cairo rail axis and the transit point for ship travel between the Mediterranean and India. Terrific travel poster inserted after front wrapper. Articles and tons of advertisements for hotels, businesses catering to tourists, luxury shops, photography studios, and so on.  Also covers the Sudan. Leo Weinthal was a publisher and journalist; he wrote a contemporary history of the Cape to Cairo railway. Fair to good condition, a serviceable copy of a very rare item.  Pages were waterstruck along the bottom edge, and the lower tips of the last few pages were stuck but are now freed. Spine mostly perished, only a small bit remains. Front wrapper and poster insert detached with minor damage to the left edge of the poster where staples rusted. Provenance: An Anglo-Egyptian family of long standing. ,
