Near fine.
Original highly impressed cloth with title in gilt on cover reading "Souvenir de St. Lazare / Venise 10." Fourteen captioned albumen photographs under tissue guards. First is a view of the island of St. Lazare, home to an Armenian Catholic monastic community (Mekhitarists). This is followed by seven gorgeous color photographs of Armenian prelates and those in lower orders (altar boys, for example), two black-and-white portraits, a color portrait, idealized, of Lord Byron, who famously stayed with the monks, two reproductions of pictures of saints, and finally one of a manuscript by an Armenian queen, the original of which has no color to speak of. A printed leaf at the end translates the text of the plaque into French. The album is in very fresh, near fine condition with a short tear at the bottom of the spine. Facing the first photograph, a French visitor wrote the following in a clear hand:
J'ai acheté cet album aujourd'hui au couvent des Armeniens à St. Lazare, Venise apres avoir visité ce dit couvent. / Venise le 20. Decembre 1878 /[signature]
Consequently, we can know the approximate date of the book.
