New York, Forest and Stream Publishing Company, 1885, Cloth

First edition, Very good.

First edition. Large folio. Original cloth. Spine rebacked with original spine covering, including titling, mostly preserved. Multigenerational inscription on title page, the last date being 1921. Aside from the spine, which must have needed conservation in the past, this copy is remarkably well preserved. Most listed copies show significant deterioration in the structure of the book and the quality of the pages. This copy has firm hinges and the paper of the text block, in particular, does not suffer from the brittleness that seems to have been intrinsic to this edition. The upper right corner of one page has an old tape repair, and about a dozen of the plates have repairs to short tears on the blank side. the tape may be archival, as it has not become corroded. Plate 44, the folding plate shown in one of the photos, is loose. A true relic of the Gilded Age, when fortunes were flouted on the water as well as on Newport and Fifth Avenue mansions.  The type  of craft Kunhardt designed were meant for river and coastal cruises.
