[PHOTOGRAPHS – TINTYPES] [TINTYPES – FULL PLATE] [CHILDREN] Unattributed photographer. Two full-plate size tintypes of unidentified young children, perhaps siblings, twins, or…? Dress of the children appears to date from the 1860s.
Each tintype measures approximately 8.5 x 6.5 inches; all four corners of each are cut-off diagonally; both show evidence of having been framed in the past within oval mounts. Images are very sharp and are in Fine condition within the former oval mount outline. [25-429/430]
The young child in each tintype looks remarkably alike. However, there seems to be enough difference in the shape of the mouth and eyes and hair style to suggest they are not the same child. More likely, they are siblings, perhaps even twins, dressed in the same shirt/blouse and coat. To us, the child with the gold ring on the fourth finger of the hand resting on the studio prop chair looks like a girl; the other with the more unruly hair looks like a young boy. Since young children’s clothing often looked the same during this time period, it is (at least for us) difficult to definitively determine the sex of either.
Regardless, these hard to find full-plate tintypes are excellent examples of the ability of mid-19th century photographers to pose and photograph young children with such clarity.
