New York City, Carl and Theodor Rosenfeld, 1896-1897, Program

Very good

This 5.75" x 6.25" program was distributed at the Liliputians' performances of their "spectacular play," Merry Tramps, during their 50-city "Sixth American Tour." Complete wit 30 pages a d cover. An image of the trio in costume is featured on the front cover. The program contains fifteen reviews from the New York press, including three from German-language newspapers. In nice shape.

Th Liliputians performed under the direction of Carl and Theodor Rosenfeld and rode the wave of ethnic comedy ushered into American theater in the 1880s by Edward (Ned) Harrigan's and Tony Hart's hit Irish tenement musical comedies. Although the Liliputians spoke their lines in a combination of German and heavily accented English, reviewers noted their performances were easily understood by both English speakers and German-American attendees, among whom they were especially popular.

Supposedly, they had been court performers in the Theater of the Duke of Saxe-Meiningen, who was a internationally famous devotee of the theater and accomplished author, choreographer, and director who produced touring performances throughout Europe to great acclaim.

(For more information, see Kenrick's "1879-1890: The First Musical Comedies" at the Musicals101 website, Solomon's "Make 'Em Laugh" at the Tenement Museum website, and "George II, Duke of Saxe-Meinigen" at Wikipedia.)
