This original photo postcard, 3 ½ x 5 ½”, pictures Charmaine on horseback at the London’s ranch in Glen Ellen, California. Independent and adventurous, Charmaine London defied 19th and early 20th century expectations of femininity. Today she is best known as the wife of the famous American author Jack London, yet she was a literary trailblazer in her own right – as well as an avid horsewoman. The photograph is titled ‘Mrs. Jack London/Glen Ellen, CAL’ in the negative.
On the blank side of the card, which was stamped and mailed from Glen Ellen in 1914, the writer, one Lizzie M. Frisbie, sends birthday greetings to a friend.
