In 1953, the young photographer met Pablo Picasso, who encouraged him to create photo cycles. Clergue followed the Roma through the Camargue to their place of pilgrimage and photographed the “Gitans” on various occasions. The photographs were taken between 1955 and 1957 in Saintes Maries and Rocheville, including the cult image of the later famous guitarist Manitas de la Plata (1921-2014). - The landscape-format print was folded by the artist himself.. Clergue's collection of photographs is dedicated to the Romani people and the pilgrimage to honor their patron Saint, Sarah the Black, in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, France. One of the most striking photographs in the album is of a little girl dancing to music played by the famous Flamenco guitarist, Ricardo Baliardo, better known as Manitas de Plata. Lucien Clergue and Baliardo were friends in life, and Clergue was instrumental in introducing Baliardo to American audiences in the early 1960s.
