Here is an excellent example of renewed commerce in a vanquished Virginia during Reconstruction. A stock certificate for BUCKINGHAM SLATE COMPANY of VIRGINIA and headquartered in Richmond, Virginia. The mines are still in use near Arvonia on the south side of the James River. Dated December 1, 1868, this document sports the seal of Virginia at bottom left and a federal tax stamp on the right side. Measures 15 1/2" x 7 3/4" unfolded.
