Lynchburg, VA, Haas & Lamb, 1812, Leather Hardcover
Acceptable to Fair with binding snug, foxing within, wear to cover
This is a rare book published in 1812 by Haas & Lamb of Lynchburg, Virginia - A Journey from BABYLON to JERUSALEM or The Road to Peace and True Happiness. The author is none other than Lorenzo Dow (1777-1834) who was once described as a "gospel ranter." He was an itinerant Methodist preacher who traveled throughout the United States spending much time in Southside Virginia.
Originally from Connecticut, Dow took eccentricity to a new level. Lorenzo usually had just the clothes he stood up in, which he wore until they were so unsightly that some person in the audience would donate a replacement – which might not be the right size. He had a beard down to his chest and never combed it. He didn’t always wash. He told stories and jokes. On one occasion, mid-sermon, he snapped his Bible shut and jumped out of the window on to his waiting horse and rode off. He loved to turn up at a public event, go to the stage (uninvited) and announce loudly that he would preach on that spot in one year’s time. It is recorded that he could hold an audience of 10,000 spellbound.
Leatherbound hardcover book, 4 1/4" x 6 3/4", an index is included in the back along with a list of subscribers by County such as Bedford, Amherst, Buckingham, Cumberland, Prince Edward, Powhatan, Bath, Charlotte, Richmond, Lynchburg, etc.
