First Edition, Acceptable to Fair, Guarded Condition, Cover Hinges Loosening

Major Stiles served with the Richmond Howitzers as Major in the Army of Northern Virginia. A perspicacious account of war experiences makes this a classic Confederate book. Stiles saw most of the battles of the Army of Northern Virginia and was able to provide perceptive remarks on most of its prominent officers based on first-hand experience. An informative and entertaining memoir by a very intelligent member of Lee's army; particularly good for the 1864-1865 campaigns. This scarce first edition book is in fair to guarded condition with front and back hinges loosening.

The significance of this book is that it actually once belonged in the personal library of an authentic Confederate veteran who participated in numerous battles including Pickett's charge at Gettysburg where he was wounded and captured. Samuel W. Paulett, a Private in Co F Farmville Guard of the 18th Virginia Infantry Regiment first enlisted when he was but 16 years old. He was captured twice during the War and exchanged and his service ended when he was wounded at Sailors Creek on April 6, 1865. Paulett was long an eccentric character in Farmville where he was quite involved in the affairs of United Confederate Veterans attaining State Rank in the Virginia U.C.V. In 1897 he penned a series about his wartime experiences in The Farmville Herald. These articles were later compiled in Charles E. Burrell's History of Prince Edward County, Virginia. You can find copies of this book for sale at my Ebay store. Paulett passed away in 1930 where the Town Council passed a perpetual memory resolution placing flowers on his grave at certain times of the year. He was also a Freemason and used fraternal signs recognized by members to secure other Masons for prisoner exchange.

This is your chance to own something from an actual defender of State sovereignty who cried out in the advance of Pickett's charge "This is going to be a heller!"
