Richmond, VA, J.W. Randolph, 1860, Hardcover
First Edition, Very Good to Excellent
This is the prediction of what would trigger the War Between the States written by none other than Edmund Ruffin the Southern Firebrand who would fire the first shot on Fort Sumter in April 1861. He writes under a pseudonym of an English Resident (E.R.) correspondent for a London newspaper in a series of imaginary letters dated between 1864 and 1870. He predicted the start would be in 1864 with the election of Seward succeeding Lincoln. All manner of twists and turns take place many involving enslaved people in defense of the Confederacy.
A very rare title and this copy is in excellent condition. Hardcover, 5" x 7 1/2", 416 pages, end sheets bright yellow, prior owner's name in front and dated April 30, 1861. Includes notes of a prior bibliophile in front as well. Rear has 14 pages of books listed that J.W. Randolph published or offered for sale. Very little foxing to pages. A nice clean copy.
